FLORIDA KUNG FU ACADEMY

Welcome to John Wai’s Florida Kung Fu Academy’s . Our academy specializes in teaching authentic Choy Lay Fut Kung Fu and provides a professional, friendly environment to enhance your martial arts training.  

You will learn effective self defense techniques that include  kicks, punches, strikes, joint locks, take downs, throws, and submissions while getting in top physical shape.

We offer separate classes for kids, teens and adults, from beginner to advanced levels.  Please surf around and get acquainted with our academy.  More importantly, we encourage you to visit our school and watch our classes. You will be impressed with quality of our students and the professionalism of our instructors

 

Our Academy is dedicated to promoting and teaching authentic Chinese Kung Fu. As a member, you will receive personal attention and hands-on instruction with each lesson. Every students learns at their own pace!

Our program is designed to provide instructions at all levels, from our beginner’s classes and special children's program through advanced training in Self Defense, Weapons, Shaolin Fighting Forms, Sparring, and Full Contact (Sanshou).  

Our Male and Female Instructors are dedicated, and totally committed to your development and safety.

The instructors will guide you step by step, carefully explain each movement and demonstrate each  technique so you can acquire the full understanding of your lessons

FKFA INSTRUCTORS

Sifu John Wai

Instructor Francine Wai first began training kung fu at age seven under her uncle, Master Chan Pui of Wah Lum Kung Fu, and later trained Choy Lay Fut under the late Master Lee Koon Hung & 4th Generation Master Wong Gong. Best known for her expertise in Chinese Kung Fu Weapons, Francine has won many international championships in both kung fu tournaments and open martial arts tournaments.

Her last few competitions in the tournament circuit included first place in Weapons at the 1997 Chinese Nationals and Grand Championship at the Florida Hall of Fame Tournament.  She has since retired from competition but continues to train students for national and international competition.

Instructor Corey Engelhard was the first American instructor chosen by the late Master Lee Koon Hung when he opened his first school in the United States. Corey has won championships in several major competitions and has advanced his expertise in the Choy Lay Fut system. He is very knowledgeable on the specific elements of this system and is dedicated to the continued development of Choy Lay Fut in America.

 

Instructor Paul Gutillo began training Northern Shaolin kung fu in the early 1970’s, and later moved on to study the style of Choy Lay Fut. Chosen as a senior instructor by the late Master Lee Koon Hung, Paul went on to win many national and international championships. He is most noted for winning the Grand Championship in Fighting at the 1996 Seattle Kung Fu Championships, beating fighters from all different weight categories.  Instructor Gutillo is available for private lessons.

Instructor Bill Wright is heading into his 9th year training in the style of Choy Lay Fut. Bill quickly advanced through the ranks and became an instructor in 1994 under the late Master Lee Koon Hung. His area of expertise is in the fighting aspect of Choy Lay Fut. Going undefeated in fighting for three years in a row, Bill quickly gained recognition in the kung fu tournament circuit.  Instructor Wright is available for private lessons.

 

 

Instructor Nicki Bruscino has been training Choy Lay Fut Kung Fu since 1994 and is a three-time Grand Champion.  She is presently one of the top Women Kung Fu Competitors in the US.   She has acquired many national titles in forms and weapons in the kung fu and open tournament circuit. Her high spirit and explosive performances as a competitor has recently earned her the title of "Competitor of the Year."  Nicki recently was picked to be on the National Competition Team sponsored by Team Pepsi and recently won the Grand Champion title at the 2002 International Chinese Martial Arts Championship.

Assistant Instructor Alex Kuk started training Choy Lay Fut Kung Fu at the age of 11.   Alex has won many regional and national championships in Forms, Weaponry and Fighting. He was recently selected for The Sports Authority Martial Arts demonstration team and Team Pepsi.  Alex won the Grand Champion title at the 2002 International Chinese Martial Arts Championship. Assistant Instructor George Johnson started Martial Arts in 1975 first studying Goju Ryu and then Tae Kwon Do.  He started Choy Lay Fut in 1997 and was one of the first students at Florida Kung Fu Academy.  George has competed in local, open and international  tournaments and has won champions in forms, weapons and fighting.  
Assistant Instructor Amanda Clemens has been training Choy Lay Fut full time since 1997.  She is an up and coming International competitor who has won many championships in Forms and Weapons. Amanda presently teaches the Children's Classes at our academy.   Assistant Instructor Dossy Lewin began training kung fu in 1989 in Northern Shaolin Eagle Claw.  In 1997, she moved on to study Choy Lay Fut Kung Fu.  Dossy has won many gold medals in both forms and weaponry and she is  an active member of our Lion Dance and Demonstration team.
