Soke Glenn Kwan, Hanshi, 10th dan Genki-do Kempo Karate, was
born March 29, 1947 in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Canada to Frank and Ellen
Kwan (both deceased).
Kyoshi Larry Kwan, 9th dan Kempo-sho-kai Karate, was born on
May 15, 1945 in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan.
Both Glenn and Larry started training in boxing while in
public school, went on to wrestling in high school and in the early 60's became
involved with Moo Kempo Karate and Shotokan Karate in Regina, Saskatchewan.
First instructors for Glenn and Larry were Lyndon and Edward
Bateson under Grandmaster Olaf Simon of Calgary, Alberta with the dojo located
in Regina, Saskatchewan.
When brother Larry opened a dojo in Moose Jaw, Glenn
continued to travel to Regina with Larry to train three times a week (43 miles
away) and Glenn continued his Kempo training with Larry.
Glenn moved to Penticton, British Columbia and started
training in Kyokushinkai under the tutelage of Master Ben Bertram, personal
student of Mas. Oyama. Glenn achieved the rank of brown belt but once
again moved back to Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan and continued his Kempo training
with Larry.
In 1974 Soke Kwan moved to Barrie, Ontario, Canada and was
asked to open a martial arts dojo after receiving his black belt in June 1974.
During the period from 1974 to Present Soke Kwan continued
his training with various martial artists who taught other styles. Just to
name a few of the greatest influences and mentors: GM Olaf Simon (Moo Kempo and
Shotokan), GM Dennis R. Decker (Chi-Ling-Pai Kempo and Kung Fu), GM Edmund
Parker (American Kenpo), Prof. Wally Jay (Small Circle Jiu-Jitsu), Tsuruoka
Sensei and Sensei Monty Guest (Chito-Ryu Karate), GM Chuck Platten (Hapkido), GM
Israel "Yogi" Segarra (Goju-Kai Karate-do), Sensei Harold Howard (Jiu-Jitsu),
Kancho Sensei Scott Hogarth (Chito-Ryu and Jiu-Jitsu), Master Vic Arnold (Da-Neisei
Kempo), Hanshi Stephen Capela and Dai-Soke Matthew Durant (Goshin-Jutsu), Master
Joe Lewis (American Kickboxing), Master Bill Wallace (Kickboxing), Master John
Overton and Sensei Tony Overton (Isshynryu Karate), Sensei John and Alex
Atkinson (Kempo Karate), GM Ron Balas, Dino Hennings and Don James (Tae Kwon Do)
